"Each piece of the set utilizes techniques and devices of a particular musical period or style of Western music. These settings, however, employ contemporary musical practices, a musical perspective not unlike recalling an experience of long ago. The music is of medium-advanced grade scored for two flutes, or two oboes, or two clarinets with piano; or they may be played in interchangeable combinations.ROMANTIC MEMENTOTowards the end of the 18th century, the word “romantic” was used to distinguish a belief in the superiority of emotion over “classical” reason as the source of all truth. In music, melodies were more intense and personal; rhythm and harmony were more complex. Expressions of this idea may be heard in the works of Beethoven the lyricism of Schubert’s songs, and the operas of ‘on Weber. The relationship of words and music reached a potent and mutually reflective form during this period. Programmatic music—descriptive. narrative, or suggestive—abound in the music of Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Liszt." -
