Twelve-Tone TuneFrom the composer:
"Each piece of the set utilizes techniques and devices of a particular musical period or style of Western music. These settings, however, employ contemporary musical practices, a musical perspective not unlike recalling an experience of long ago. The music is of medium-advanced grade scored for two flutes, or two oboes, or two clarinets with piano; or they may be played in interchangeable combinations.A MODAL MOODThe word “mode” denotes a selection of tones which are arranged in a scale. (This concept may also be applied to a selection of rhythms used in a composition.) A great number of modes are possible: whole-tone, pentatonic (five-note), major (major scale), minor (minor scale), and others. The mode utilized in this piece is primarily “Dorian”. An example of this is the scale formed by playing all of the white keys of the piano from “d” to “d”. A distinctive quality is noted in the “minor” quality and the lowered seventh step of the scale. This mode has been used in numerous “folk” melodies of Western-European origin. In this piece, following a short introduction, a folk-like melody is introduced. This is repeated with variations building to a vigorous ending." -
