"Each piece of the set utilizes techniques and devices of a particular musical period or style of Western music. These settings, however, employ contemporary musical practices, a musical perspective not unlike recalling an experience of long ago. The music is of medium-advanced grade scored for two flutes, or two oboes, or two clarinets with piano; or they may be played in interchangeable combinations.TWELVE-TONE TUNE
Tonal music—music based upon major and minor scales—imposes a relationship of notes with a distinct reference point. In a major scale, for instance, “do” is usually the predominant note. Twelve-Tone Technique (2TT) attempts to avoid such a reference point by employing a “row” of all twelve tones in which the relationship between each tone is equal. Music without a tonal center or tonic is called “atonal”. Important exponents of music in this genre include 20th century composers Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. TWELVE-TONE TUNE, although not strictly atonal, generally avoids a strong tonal center and utilizes a number of devices of 12TT: the row played in its original form; backwards (retrograde), inverted (upside down); changed direction of notes (inversion); combined retrograde and inversion; and transposition of the row higher or lower. The opening section of the piece introduces a lyric middle part and the piece concludes with a rapid, playful giocoso." -
