A Modal Mood
Twelve-Tone TuneFrom the composer:
"Each piece of the set utilizes techniques and devices of a particular musical period or style of Western music. These settings, however, employ contemporary musical practices, a musical perspective not unlike recalling an experience of long ago. The music is of medium-advanced grade scored for two flutes, or two oboes, or two clarinets with piano; or they may be played in interchangeable combinations.IMPRESSIONS OF A CLOUDThe music of Claude-Achille Debussy (1862-1918) is often linked to the Impressionist movement in painting (Monet, Manet, Renoir). The movement, musically, however, was rooted in antagonism of the Romantic dynamism of Beethoven and Wagner. Many Impressionistic works, including some pieces by Maurice Ravel, employ the whole-tone scale. This six-note scale tends to evoke a sensuous quality and lends itself to the creation of effectively static melodies and non-functional harmonies—i.e., harmonies used for their intrinsic sound rather than as a means to propel the music. Debussy’s piano music also utilizes modal and whole-tone harmonies. Interestingly, some of his later chamber music reflects a return to a more Classical idiom—a backwards glance to Rameau and Couperin." -
