Book 1 of Passage Studies consists of 17 studies based on music not originally for the clarinet, and in Thurston's words from the preface, "...freely adapted without impairing their proper musical significance." They are technical in nature, and for each study, Thurston indicates a specific problem to be the focus of practice. These include smooth legato, delicate staccato, various phrasings, flexibility of lip, going over the break, smooth arpeggios, side key use, left-hand little-finger use, accidentals, triplets, and modern (5/8) rhythm.
Quick factsLength: most exercises are 1 or 2 pages
Range: highest pitch = written F♯6
Key signature: no ♯/♭, 1♯, 3♯, 1♭, 2♭, 3♭
Time signature: 2/2, 2/4, 3/4, 3/8, 4/4, 6/8, 5/8Most of the studies are in 4/4, 2/4 and 3/4 time, and the majority have key signatures no sharps/flats or 1 sharp/1 flat. There are very few accidentals, and with scant exception the writing doesn't go higher than altissimo E6. The Passage Studies present a consistent difficulty appropriate for the early intermediate clarinettist, and are organized in a chronological order, starting with Bach and finishing with Bartók; most are baroque and classical styles from the eighteenth century.
Thurston has included markings for suggested metronome, breaths, and side/pinky key use.
