This edition consists of a digital (PDF) format of Cyrille Rose's 32 Études, adapted from Ferling's 48 Études, Op. 31. As the title suggests, the études have been stripped of all phrasing markings—dynamics, slurs/articulation, and expression text—leaving only the pitches and rhythm.Rose's 32 Études have been edited many times since their earliest publication in 1893. While each subsequent editor endeavored to impart their own pedagogical and artistic stance, The Naked Rose instead offers a “blank canvas” version for readers to explore their own phrasing devoid of outside editorial influence.
While the barlines, repeats, ornaments, and fermatas are consistent with the earliest edition, The Naked Rose does contain a few corrections in pitches and rhythm, as well as some courtesy accidentals. Readers are encouraged to consult a thorough edition comparison in The Rose Report to ensure awareness of the many pitch disagreements across editions.
Two sets of the études are included:
- one with bar numbers on every measure, for convenient reference to accompany CAMco’s Rose Report, a document which compares all editions of the Rose 32 in print
- one with regular bar numbers at the start of every system for musicians to add their own markings
