Alamiro Giampieri (1893 – 1963) was an Italian clarinetist and composer. The Carnival of Venice was first published by Ricordi in 1848 under the title Il Carnevale di Venezia, Capriccio variato.  It uses the same Italian folk song popularized by Paganini's variations from the early 19th century.  Four variations and a snappy finale cast the clarinettist as a virtuosic acrobat, and the comfortable writing allows for blazing speeds.  There are only a few large leaps (a couple of lines in the second variation), and a handful of passages which involve the altissimo register (the highest note is a written A6); brilliant arpeggios and scales make for manageable technical demands.  The entire work is written in B♭ major, except for the third variation in the parallel B♭ minor.  After the introduction in 2/4 and 4/4 time, the rest is in 6/8.

The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly.  This edition doesn't have any bar numbers, but you can get them right here.

Sharon Kam (cl), Itamar Golan (pn) (2008) Shows facile technique and plenty of effective sculpting of the line, even in the faster passages.
Kiyosumi Ogura (cl), Mitsutaka Shiraishi (pn) 2009 (2010) Maintains delicacy and poise; an edgeless sound. Bravely and effortlessly slurs the leaps in the second variation, and shows nimble articulation in the later variations.
Eduard Brunner (cl), Munich Chamber Orchestra con. Hans Stadlmair 1988 (2018) With string orchestra accompaniment. Lovingly adherent to the dynamic opportunities marked in the score, and makes many of his own touches.
