From the preface:"Legend
Mughal emperor Akbar once asked his court musician Miyan Tansen to sing ‘Raga Deepak’ the raga of the Light and Fire, which caused all the lamps in the courtyard to light up. But Tansen’s body became so hot too that he had to sit in the river to cool himself. However the river began to boil and it became apparent that Tansen would soon boil death. However he was prepared and had his daughter learned a Malhar (Rain Raga) and now she sang it to cool him down. It starts raining and it rained harder and harder and Tansen’s body was cooled and he was saved.Pa-ni This composition is inspired by the ‘Malhars’ and the legend of Tansen. — A Malhar is a So powerful raga that when sung it can induce rainfall. The name Pa-ni means water in Hindu language, and they are also names of notes (swaras) in Hindu music. Namely the notes Pa and ni.There are 10 different thaats: a thaat is a modal tone system and is similar to our scale. Every thaat has 7 tones (swaras) Sa-Ri-Ga-ma-Pa-Dha-Ni (do,re,mi,fa,sol,la,si,)A thaat consists of the notes ' Sa, ri, Ri, ga, Ga, ma, Ma, Pa, dha, Dha, ni, Ni (assuming C is: *C-D-flat- D-E-flat-E-F-F-sharp-G-A-flat-A-B-flat-B), but any tone can be assumed as long as the intervals remain the same. Hindu music is often sung around a tone. All in all, there are 22 tones in a thaat and they are usually denoted by initials. Sa and Pa are the main tones and are not raised or lowered. (*The comparison with C-D-flat-D-E-flat - etc is to give an overview of the intervals.)The thaat used in this composition is Kafi, (Doric mode) S,R,g,m,P,D,n,S'. Many rain ragas (Malhars) are derived from thaat Kafi. The notes Pa-ni are frequently used. The piece starts with the middle tones and there are occasional rain motifs. Then the tones become low and again there are recognizable rain themes, then the - music moves to higher tones (representing the singing of the Malhar) and a recurring theme, merging into rain. So all registers are used in this composition. No further dynamics have been applied because everyone has to fill that in for themselves, as the raga singers do. It may sound a bit mesmerizing." -
