  • From the composer:
"Back in the late 20th century, one way to compose music was to interview performers about the unusual effects they could produce on their instruments, and then to write out those special effects, perhaps in the same order. Another way to compose was to provide some material and ask the performer to roll dice or shuffle cards to determine an order. Other approaches were brewing: minimalism, conceptual art, theater pieces. Composers were exploring the boundaries of music, and sometimes we went over the line.

Several Unrelated Events is a collection of movements that are wildly different from one another. Some sound like traditional music, and others don’t. Some are written in ordinary musical notation, and others consist of verbal instructions. Some movements are theatrical, some need improvisation, and some are actually composed by the composer. Most of them are quite brief. The player may perform any of the movements in any order.

I composed these events for clarinetist Alan Solomon, and he premiered them in concerts by Footnote, our multimedia ensemble. Alan inspired the music with his gorgeous sound, his virtuosity, his comic flair, and his willingness to try almost anything. Not long after, David Ocker played the piece with his own brand of wit, skill, and soulfulness."
