From the composer:
"A Great Treasure springs from friendship and family. Movses Pogossian (violin) had the idea to perform concerts with his daughter Anoush (clarinet) and his friend Patrick Mullin (narrator). My family and the Pogossians have been friends for many years, so when Movses invited me to compose a piece for this project, I was delighted. His friends Helen and Justus Schlichting generously commissioned the piece. I am grateful to be part of such a web of friendship and music-making.
Searching for an appropriate story, I read folktales. I posted a request on Facebook for stories with strong female characters, and a friend whose mother is a folklorist sent a list of folktales with strong female characters! One summary caught my imagination: A young peasant woman weaves the most beautiful carpets and knows how to read and write; when she is courted by a prince who can’t read and knows no craft, she turns him down. But he learns to weave, and to read and write, and...well, you’ll find out what happens. I love that this story upends some fairytale conventions.
At first I didn’t even notice that the tale is from Armenia, making it even more perfect for a Pogossian performance. Like any folktale, it exists in different versions. I read about a version in Russian from the Soviet days (in which a priest represents evil) and an animated film in Armenian. I read versions on the internet and in a beautiful picture book, The Weave of Words, retold by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by Raúl Colón. I adapted the story for this piece."
