From the composer:
"Sequoia Soliloquy was originally written for bassoon, since I feel that the bassoon is the closest instrument, timbrally, to the sounds of a tree. It has been transcribed for other instruments made of wood. When writing Sequoia Soliloquy, I wanted to explore ideas of what a tree might say if it could speak. The piece cycles through many moods, representing the many conflicting feelings a tree in today’s world might experience, from joyful sweetness to anger and exasperation. This piece is transcribable for any instrument made of wood, for in order to hear a tree sing and lament, it has to have been cut down." -
