"In the spring of 2020, in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, feelings of intense loneliness crept in following the forced separation of people from their support systems. Students who spent four years of college becoming best friends were not given the chance to say goodbye. Elegy for Time Gone By is a commemoration, reflection, and expression of our deepest friendships and our feelings of loss over the time that was taken away from us.
For the composer, this piece explores memories of her and her longtime stand partner, Zach Stola. The two played together in countless concerts during their time in music school. As a tribute to their partnership, subtle aspects of this work are evocative of the music many of the composers whose music the two were scheduled to play, but never got the chance."
