"The presence of a shadow can be calming, as a tranquil nighttime landscape, or terrifying, as the underside of our beds as children. This piece explores many scenes of shadows, from flickering candles and sunlight filtering through leaves to underground speakeasies and dark alleys. Shadows are illustrated in the piece through the use of parallel motion which, although typically discouraged in counterpoint, can create both the calming feeling of being with a trusted friend, and the eerie sense of being followed."
