1. inf. the upper regions of the atmosphere or space; the clear sky; the heavens; air.
2. ancient cosmology:
a) a purer form of fire or air - the fifth element that filled all space beyond the sphere of the
moon, constituting the substance of the stars and planets;
b) Aether - the ancient Greek personification of the clear upper air of the sky.
3. 17-19C physics: a hypothetical medium formerly believed to permeate all space, and through
which light and other electromagnetic radiation were thought to move.
4. physics: R1-O-R2, the volatile chemical compound known for its lightness and lack of colour,
with anesthetic properties.
