From the arranger Mary Alice Druhan:
"Kundiman art songs originated in the Tagalog-speaking regions of the Philippines and are a blend of indigenous folksong traditions with European musical influences brought by the Spanish. Although the primary themes of the songs are love and courtship, they also often signify sentiments of nationalism and resistance against colonial oppression. As such, the Kundiman served as both love songs and as anthems of unity at a time when the country fought for its independence. The development of the art song tradition is tied closely to many Filipino historical events, which empowered the music of the genre to forge a national identity.

Francisco Santiago (1889–1947) is recognized by many as the “Father of Kundiman Art Song.” His first and most significant piece is “Kundiman (Anak-Dalita),” the first Kundiman art song. This particular piece, Pakiusap!!! was written in 1921 and is one of his most celebrated and recognized works.

Hidden in this poetic and emotional plea for a beloved to witness one’s devotion is a story of deep loyalty and nationalism. An undertone of the struggle for national preservation and independence is portrayed as desperation for mercy and compassion, even at sacrificing one’s own life. Pakiusap!!! might very well capture the vulnerability and intensity of a devoted and unrequited love but its real value lies in the composer’s love of country and tradition, his commitment to “love and protection,” and his call to his people to “open the window.”'
