The first part doubles on B-flat and E-flat clarinet.
From the composer:
"Main-Lineing is a repetitive piece which grows backwards. It is in five sections, each of an average forty seconds' duration, which are played as follows:The final section is heard first
then the penultimate and final sections
then the last three
then the last four
and finally all five sections in order.The piece thus 'grows' to fifteen short section in its eleven-minute time-span.
Main-Lineing (the spelling is deliberate) is so called because it uses a compositional method of that name. One voice in the texture carries the 'burden' of the music (the 'main line') while the others act as satellites relating and responding to it. In the present piece the main line passes from instrument to instrument, sometimes swiftly.
All the actual notes of Main-Lineing are written out; but I leave 'loud or soft, smooth or rough' to the players, who are also encouraged to vary certain things during the repeats of the sections. This is of course exactly what happens in early music.
As in early music, it is not the composer's intention to give the players a license to do anything—taste and a sense of the idiom are required for a good performance of Main-Lineing."
