From the preface:
Pan I attempts to express the deep emotional feelings of the Korean people by using the timbre of the clarinet. The pentatonic scale is used extensively as well as a spatial concept of repeated phrases and rhythm often used in Eastern music. Pan I is divided into five parts, each with irregular ornamentation. Grace notes that are common to Korean traditional instruments are important components in the first and last parts. The long notes are intended to express the implied sounds of internal breathing in human beings.
