"It was only around the turn of the last century that the Korean people were confronted with European music, specifically through a German bandmaster. This was primarily military music.
Since then, we have been in a constant conflict – also in our education – between our traditional Asian musical culture and the European-American culture, which has gained more and more dominance over time.In my piece MAN-NAM I, I attempted to depict the encounter between these two cultural worlds in order to overcome the culture shock within myself. This piece was inspired by a Korean poem by the poet Sa-Im-Dang Sin (16th century), in which she speaks of her longing for her mother. She wrote it down in Chinese characters. I placed some of these Chinese characters as symbols above the individual parts of the composition.
MAN-NAM I is divided into four parts, the third of which transitions into the last with a cello cadenza. In the first part, I tentatively attempt to overcome my fear. The second part is an escape into the protective solitude of the mountains. In the third part, the agonizing struggle triggered within me by culture shock is brought to the forefront. The concluding fourth part turns more strongly to Korean tradition. (The cello, for example, plays exclusively pizzicato, thus suggesting the sound of two Korean drums.) The music gains its own center and quiet firmness: reconciliation."
("Erst um die letzte Jahrhundertwende wurde das koreanische Volk mit europäischer Musik konfrontiert, und zwar durch einen deutschen Kapellmeister. Es handelte sich dabei vorwiegend um Militärmusik.
Seither stehen wir - auch in unserer Ausbildung - in einem fortlaufenden Konflikt zwischen unserer traditionellen asiatischen Musikkultur und der europäisch-amerikanischen, die im Laufe der Zeit mehr und mehr an Übergewicht gewonnen hat.In meinem Stück MAN-NAM I habe ich versucht, die Begegnung der beiden Kulturwelten zu gestalten, um den Kulturschock in mir selber zu überwinden. Dieses Stück wurde angeregt durch ein koreanisches Gedicht der Dichterin Sa-Im-Dang Sin (16. Jh.), in dem sie von ihrer Sehnsucht nach ihrer Mutter spricht. Sie hat es in chinesischer Schrift niedergeschrieben. Einige chinesische Schriftzeichen daraus habe ich als Symbole über die einzelnen Teile der Komposition gesetzt.
MAN-NAM I gliedert sich in vier Teile, von denen der dritte mit einer Violoncello-Kadenz in den letzten übergeht. Im ersten Teil versuche ich zögernd, meine Angst zu überwinden. Der zweite Teil ist eine Flucht in die schützende Einsamkeit der Berge. Im dritten Teil wird der quälende Kampf, der durch den Kulturschock in mir ausgelöst wurde, ganz nach vorne getragen. Der abschließende vierte Teil wendet sich stärker der koreanischen Tradition zu. (Das Violoncello z.B. spielt ausschließlich Pizzicati und deutet damit den Klang zweier koreanischer Trommeln an.) Die Musik gewinnt ihre eigene Mitte und ruhige Festigkeit: Versöhnung.")
