This arrangement tightens up the scope of the work, resulting in a breezier presentation. With all of the cuts noted below, including omission of the third movement, the duration is around 17 minutes—about half that of the original's 32 minutes. Beyond strictly reducing the string parts for piano, there are a handful of moments where the clarinet plays lines from string parts.
I:
- A typical performance of the first movement observing both repeats is 13.5 minutes in length (although today's performers often omit the second section's repetition); the following reductions bring the duration to around 6 minutes
- omit both repeats
- cut 14 measures (bars 97-111 full version)
- clarinet takes first violin part in mm. 91-94, then cello part at m. 95, then second violin part in m. 98-99 (mm. 112-13 full version)
- clarinet takes first violin part in mm. 122-26 (mm. 136-140 full version), giving the piano the clarinet part in mm. 126-27 (mm. 140-41 full verison)
II: no changes to clarinet partIII: cut
IV:
- the fourth movement with all repeats is typically 9.25 minutes, and is reduced here to around 4 minutes
- no repeats anywhere
- cut original's variations II & III (32 measures total)
- final Allegro: cut 16 measures (bars 114-130 full version); about 20 seconds of music
- clarinet takes viola part in mm. 10-12, and then second violin part in mm. 13-14
- clarinet takes first violin part starting in the fifth bar of variation IV (printed as var. II), for 8 measures
