From the preface:
"Whereas it is unlikely that Mendelssohn would have written the ascending chromatic figures for the contemporary clarinet (which between 1790 and 1825 developed rapidly from Anton Stadler's five-keyed instrument to Iwan Müller's thirteen-keyed model), in every other way Allegro Brillant could have been conceived for clarinet and piano. By transposing down a half step from the original A major, these figurations, so idiomatic for the piano, become quite viable for the clarinet even when played at the blazing speed that the music requires, and a few of the piano passages are a little more difficult in A-flat major than in the original key. This democratic tradeoff results in a piece which is challenging and fun for both players, and bas more musical depth than typical virtuoso fare.In preparing this transcription I consulted the collected works of Mendelssohn (published by Breitkopf und Härtel) and the International and Peters editions, which differ only in the smallest of details. I added a few dynamics and articulations which are indicated by brackets. Other than an occasional octave displacement the transcription is quite literal. I thank the pianists who have helped me refine the piano part over several years of performing, in particular Beveridge Webster, Diane Walsh, Barry Snyder, and Martin Amlin. Several passages offer fascinating fingering options; those suggested are merely one possibility." -
