    From the composer:
"Sette canoni enigmatici were written in 1955 as a present and tribute to my teacher, Luigi Dallapiccola. The Italian verses and riddles which serve as clues to the resolution of these canons were intended for, and directed exclusively to him. They are included here, but are not decoded.

Although the work was not composed with instruments in mind, I have extracted three sets of resolutions. The first was done in 1962 and keep within the limits of the String Quartet. The second and third were done in 1966 and are transposed down a fourth. The version for Two Violas and Two Violincellos or Bassoons and the version for Clarinet Quartet may be performed as is or combined to make a version for Mixed Quartet."
