    From the composer:
"My good friend Kelly Johnson at the University of Central Arkansas asked me to write a piece for her and her UCA saxophonist colleague Matt Taylor. Since Matt has a strong background in jazz, Kelly asked that I include some jazz components in the music, so for each movement I was inspired by a different jazz tune from the canon, with an overarching theme of outer space. Therefore, each of the movements comes from a jazz tune that has something to do with outer space.

The first movement, "The Other Side of Nowhere," comes from Sun Ra's classic song "Space is the Place," with the primary riffs of that tune serving as the basis for a set of variations, with a little diversion near the end. The title comes from one of Sun Ra's eloquent quotes: "Somewhere in the other side of nowhere is a place in space beyond time where the Gods of mythology dwell." (1 Mike Walsh — Sun Ra: Stranger from Outer Space, published in the Philadelphia Weekly in 2004.)

The second movement, "Purple Dusk," is inspired by elements from Hoagy Carmichael's iconic "Stardust," particularly clarinetist Artie Shaw's immensely popular 1940 recording of the work. The title comes from the opening line of Mitchell Parish's lyrics: "And now the purple dusk of twilight time/Steals across the meadows of my heart..."

The third movement, "Breathe," uses some harmonic relationships present in Friedrich Gulda's haunting "The Air From Other Planets" as a jumping-off point for newly-composed melodies, with the clarinetist and saxophonist each having moments to shine.

The final movement, "Broken Glass," is inspired by Charlie Parker's blisteringly-fast "Constellation." The back- and-forth nature of the simple half-note scale wise head of Parker's tune inspired a playful bounce between the two instruments, and little quotes from Parker's solos are interspersed with original melodic material to create a twisted romp."
