B-flat clarinet doubles on bass clarinet.
The duration of the first movement varies due to the aleatoric form.
From the composer:
"As we navigate our time on earth, our perspectives and ability to see broader horizons is often described by our relationship to the earth (ground) in that moment. Higher Ground explores three different states of being that we encounter along our journey. "Grounded" represents a state of balance and connectedness to the moment; a sense of inner peace and calm should predominate the mood."Underground" is a set of variations that become increasingly more disjunct from the original theme at letter A. Each new letter suggest a different mood to embrace, similar to the options we try as we seemingly unsuccessfully try to move beyond the initial trauma or conflict.
"Higher Ground" represents an arrival point beyond, indeed above the fray of earthly conflict, an apotheosis where even linear time is transcended. This movement should be played very freely, without concern for matters of temporal organization."
