From the program notes:
"Four Tempers was inspired partly by impressions I had after observing the posturing of politicians in the years following the 9/11 tragedy, where compassion and tolerance became supplanted by belligerence and mistrust, and lines were drawn everywhere in the sand. The following poem describes these strange developments:We were all burning up after the burning down,
Some called for patience, others aggression;
Eventually those who wanted our patience
Had aggression toward those who wanted aggression,
Who now were asking us all for patience;
Burning up, burning down.The moods expressed in Four Tempers are not my own, but simply my observations and sonic interpretation of the moods of others; the music should be played with an unrelenting intensity, an almost controlled chaos."
