From the composer:
"Stanley Hasty is one of this country's most well-respected and influential clarinet teachers. I was privileged to have the opportunity to study with him at the Eastman School of Music while I was pursuing my doctorate degree there durign the early- to mid-1980s. I was honored when Richard MacDowell and Nathan Williams of the University of Texas-Austin asked me to be a part of the tribute program for Mr. Hasty at the 2010 ClarinetFest in Austin. It seemed to me fitting to compose a short piece which would both involve the other participants of the tribute program—also former Hasty students—and highlight some of the "teaching gems" of Stan's that we all experienced andd that were particularly meaningful to my development as a clarinetist.H'tah Molly focuses on Mr. Hasty's concept of preparing the air before initiating a sound by blowing while the tongue is still on the reed, resulting in a "h'tah" effect. Klose Calls is a call-and-response series of wide intervals, Stan's "expressive intervals." Mr. Hasty used the register studies in the Klose Method extensively to help students develop proficiency with expressive intervals. When playing these wide intervals, however, there is an increased risk of getting "the grunt"—an undertone—which Stan pointed out numerous times in my playing during my studies with him! So, I have included an optional coda for solo clarinet in this study which exploits the grunt resulting in a multiphonic paraphrase of the first part of the study. Trill Ride derives from Stan's insistence on even, controlled finger movement, in particular his way of thinking about trills. I remember in lessons he would tell me, "This is F, and (gradually lifting his right hand index finger higher and higher away from the clarinet) this is G, this is G, this is G, and this is G." The fundamental concept was that even if we are actually moving our fingers at an even pace, the farther away from the clarinet we move our fingers, the more uneven the trill or passage. What a beautiful and simple illustration! Mr. Hasty's' overall approach to teaching was for me one of deep analysis conveyed with great clarity and succinctness, which made a profound and lasting impression on how I thought about teaching; thank you, Stan!" -
