"The beautiful tune is like sunshine on a summer’s day warming our skin and soul.
Y La Negra Bailaba (...and the Black Woman Danced) was written by the prolific
Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuouna and exemplifies his Afro-Cuban danzon style that blends musical styles of Cuba, Europe and Africa with its syncopated rhythms and unusual harmonies. The style roots to the elegant, European-based society salons and combining the idea of ‘ danza’ with ‘ Afro-Cuban’ was Lecuona’s way of mashing up society’s strict lines. This arrangement for clarinet choir and optional conga adapts this wonderful song to the clarinet choir adhering to Lecouna’s groove and main melody but adding many embellishments, texture changes and solo sections for each part. The arrangers also weaves in and a few other popular Cuban melodies you might recognize to create a joyful song that will have everyone tapping along."
