From the composer:
"The title Sand Waltz refers to the 19th century French writer Aurore Dupin (1804–1876), who use the name George Sand as her pseudonym. She was a strong, very outspoken and significant writer who led a very colorful life and paved the way for female artists in the very much male-dominated literary terain. Her most well known association was, of course, with Frederic Chopin, and it became apparent to me while I was composing the piece that traces of his pieces were somehow making their way into mine. The 3/4 meter of the Waltz happened insistently and the familiar melodic gestures just slipped in. So, I thought, considering the nature of the women composer's festival who commissioned the work, to pay tribute to that famous partnership and especially to Sand herself."
