From the introduction:
"Water Birds is an aural immersion in a soothing water habitat with flourishing bird wildlife. The loon is the central character, and its signature call is featured in this composition as the loon seeks a mate. The arc of the piece involves setting the scene, introducing the loon, following its search amongest a higher tessitura of neighboring birds, culminating in exciting dicovery followed by abating into peaceful co-habitation.

In the original version of Water Birds composed by Mara Helmuth and Rebecca Danard in 2010, the Bb/Bass clarinet’s sound was processed and manipulated live by a second performer’s computer system. The two partners responded to each other in an improvisatory manner. In the present adaptation for clarinet and fixed audio, the performer will hear the written part’s motives resurface in the audio track. It is not necessary for the performer to execute the piece in the same way each time or to initiate each motive. A motive may be repeated or segmented into smaller chunks, and segments within a given motive may be repeated—much like how birds build their calls into sequences. The included verbiage often refers to birdlike motions, and the performer is encouraged to adopt the lexicon of movements or build their own motions to help execute the bird-like quality of each motive. (This also references the original conception of the work, where the performer walked to different parts of the stage to activate sensors for different electronic sounds.)

It is possible to perform this piece on a variety of clarinets: [B-flat + bass] is preferred, and [B-flat + bass + E-flat] is perhaps most optimal for the sake of variety. B-flat clarinet alone also acceptable, as this instrument is most broadly compatible with the tessitura of the fixed audio.

It is also possible to perform this piece as a quartet, with two “conversing” B-flat clarinets presenting the primary dialogue following the arc of the piece, and the bass and E-flat clarinets providing additional supporting comments." -
