    From the composer:
"I wanted to write a piece about honoring history and the people who have come before us. As I began to write my thoughts went to the concepts and events in history that are hard or even impossible to grasp and accept… those that are perplexing, unfathomable and incomprehensible. I wanted the work to be introspective and reflective but also have outbursts of frustration and anger in the music. The three instrumental lines (flute, clarinet and cello) each have their own distinct voice and experience, especially at the beginning and cadenza section starting at measure 57. Yet the lines converge with shared experiences such as in the melody found at measure 20 and 71 . The D pizzicatos represent the unending ticking of time and tension it creates. Much of the work is played with rubato and freedom given to the musicians to express the music as they feel needed.

Grasping History is a work that explores the feelings and sensations of trying to grasp the complicated parts of history from thousands of years ago to just yesterday, as well as the challenges that continue today."
