"Blue Cheese & Olive Oil is a five-minute homage for wind quintet to Berio and Boulez on their 100th birthdays.
In preparation for writing this piece, I read a book of interviews with Berio, and another of interviews with Boulez. I listened to lots of their music, and ploughed through analytical studies of compositions. I found most of this tremendously interesting, but alas, no source of inspiration revealed itself.
As a last resort, with the deadline pressing ever nearer, I resorted to Wikipedia, where I discovered that Boulez was born in Montbrison (home of Fourme de Montbrison, a blue cheese with appellation d'origine contrôlée certification) and Berio was born in Oneglia (also the birthplace of Filippo Berio, of olive oil fame).
This was the spark I needed, and I decided to write a piece that conveys the tanginess of the cheese, with long lines of semiquavers as the blue veins tunneling through, and the smooth, delicious pepperiness of olive oil. All of the notes are derived from various musical spellings of the composers' names (I ultimately did use Boulez's technique for deriving many harmonies from one set of notes), and the faster sections use the dimensions and weight of Fourme de Montbrison (13 cm in diameter and 19 cm tall, with a mass between 3.3 and 4.4 lbs) as metric building blocks.
