  • This edition consists of Ferling's 48 Études, Op. 31 adapted by Mark Wolbers to exploit the full range of clarinets with low C extensions, including the modern bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, A clarinet with low C extensions, and basset horn.

Most clarinettists will recognize the majority of these studies through Cyrille Rose's 32 Études (of which all but one are expanded arrangements from the Ferling 48).  In his own adaptation, Wolbers maintains the entirety of Ferling's original work, which features a more succinct form (compared to Rose), and also employs 18th and 19th century ornamentation.

Even with the downward expansion of the pitch range, the uppermost pitches have not been neglected; the following table lists the lowest and highest pitch for each étude.

Ferling's études were originally published in 1840 for the oboe and were progressively organized in every major and minor key, with one slow and one fast étude in each key.  Arranger Wolbers writes in the foreword that in following his primary goal to fully explore the lower notes of the instrument, key signatures were occasionally changed when it provided "...more interesting and intensive opportunities in the bottom register."  The original numbering of the études has been retained.

Eleven études have altered key signatures in Wolbers' adaptation, listed below:

    Étude #

Even with these changes, the publication still ultimately covers all major and minor keys.
