    Alonzo “Zo” Elliot (1891 – 1964) was an American composer and songwriter. Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, Elliot was educated at St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, Phillips Academy (Andover, Massachusetts), Yale University, Cambridge University, and Columbia Law School. He also studied music privately with Nadia Boulanger and Leonard Bernstein, among others.

    Elliot composed the well-known march “British Eighth” in tribute to General Bernard Montgomery and the Eighth Army, an allied field army formation fighting in the North African and Italian campaigns.

    From the arranger, Paula Corley:

    "The homophonic characteristics of the march provide an excellent platform for teaching centered sound, intonation, blend, and balance. The key signatures, range and rhythmic structure represent intermediate level skills. Arranged for clarinet choir, the form and structure remain true to Elliot’s original composition while providing options for less experienced clarinetists."

    First clarinet provides principal melody; range: C4 to A5
    Second clarinet provides harmony with limited exposure in the clarion register;
    Range: C4 to E
    ♭5
    Third clarinet (range: F3 to B♭4) and alto clarinet (range: C4 to F5) provide the counter melody
    Bass Clarinet (range: F3 to C5) and E-flat contra-alto clarinet (range: C4 to G5) provide the melodic bass voice
