Any clarinetist who has suffered a hand or arm injury knows that the the road to recovery can be difficult. In addition to the practical need to potentially reduce or eliminate the use of a hand, one must contend with psychological and emotional challenges during the recovery period. Author Mary Alice Druhan, DMA, suffered a serious playing-related injury, and her experience inspired her research into musician injury, prevention, and recovery. Her work in this area has been published in the International Clarinet Association's Clarinet journal, and her lectures have received praise from students and teachers across the country.
The One-Handed Clarinetist’s Workbook is Druhan's answer to the lack of accessible material to practice during recovery. It offers a thorough collection of material to support a balanced and engaging practice routine for individual hand development while dealing with the injury-recovery process. Through 140+ pages of warm-ups, fundamental exercises, études, and repertoire studies, clarinetists can stay connected to their musical growth and development during a time when progress may seem impossible.
Note that this resource is for informational and educational purposes only, and is not intended to be a substitute for medical or professional care. If you plan to use this resource while you are experiencing a medical condition, it should only be applied through the guidance of a qualified health provider.
Since it is separated into units for either the left or right hand, the workbook is also a valuable resource for any clarinetist's individual hand development. With its organization by difficulty level, it provides challenges to improve hand position, hand motion, and overall ergonomics at all skill levels.
The One-Handed Clarinetist’s Workbook begins with warm-ups centered around fundamentals of maintaining tone, breathing, embouchure, voicing, endurance, dynamic control, and articulation. This is followed by scales, finger coordination exercises, and drills in register slurs/harmonics for a wide variety of practice goals. Lastly, this workbook includes some original études along with fresh studies which adapt existing works from the clarinet literature. The repertoire section covers known classics from the likes of Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mozart, and Stravinsky, and also exposes clarinetists to more recent composers including Jenni Brandon, Valerie Coleman, Carlos Guastavino, and Shulamit Ran.
A set of silicone rubber plugs is available for completely sealing the upper joint:
By inserting the plugs into tone holes and propping closed specific mechanisms, one can isolate the use of the right hand. Note that the actual colors of the three types of plugs may vary, but they can be distinguished by their size (the publication includes instructions for identifying and placing the plugs). The specific dimensions of the plugs can be found here.
Orders consisting of only the plugs set (or PDF + Plugs) qualify for free no-rush shipping in the USA, no discount code needed (ships via USPS First Class, which could take over a week to arrive; if you need faster delivery, please choose one of the other paid shipping methods during checkout).
