  • From the publisher:

"Heart's Desire is a free fantasy based on the hymn "Herzlich tut mich verlangenn" by composer Samuel Scheidt; the title of the work derives from the opening words of the hymn. The work was originally composed for contrabassoon and piano in the spring of 1991 after the composer had heard a tape of a recital with Susan Nigro on contrabassoon. In writing the music, Dragansky decided to emphasize the instrument and downplay the usual grotesque clichés that are too often associated with contrabassoon. Scheidt's hymn seemed the perfect vehicle to employ as a starting point for a piece that shows the contra bassoon's more songful side. It was premiered on September 22, 1991 in recital at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois.

This transcription for contra-alto clarinet and piano was made in 2014 to add to the small amount of serious repertoire currently available for that instrument. Needless to say, all metronome markings are to be treated as suggestions only, with a plus-or-minus value of at least four in either direction."
