From the composer:
"Friendship, a solo piece for any clarinet in the clarinet family, was a commission and consortium initiated by the ICA and ICA Clarinet Enthusiasts Committee with the goal of creating a work approachable for enthusiasts while still engaging to seasoned professionals.
The music was inspired by the friendships we have made at clarinet and music events. We "Meet and Greet" and get to know each other with a great buzz of energy surrounding us. We part ways to our many locations all over the world, experiencing a great distance or "The Sea Between Us." Finally, the time comes for us to meet again at another event, and we celebrate each "Reunion" that we are able to enjoy.
I. Meet and Greet
Following a lively introduction, this movement goes straight into a spirited melody influenced by an English folk tune called Green Bushes. Be sure to read the lyrics to this tune so you can understand the “meeting” reference.II. The Sea Between Us
This somber movement begins with air effects that represent waves crashing on a seashore. When the main tune emerges, the phrasing continues to mimic the rise and fall of ocean waves. The air effect “waves” return again at the end.III. Reunion
This final movement is an upbeat musical race from start to finish. It was inspired by Irish lilting songs which are reminiscent of jazz improvisation. Written in 6/8 but with the intention of feeling in it 1, this musical race flies quickly." -
