From the arranger:
"I first heard Debussy's last completed work, the Sonata for Violin and Piano, while travelling across the U.S. In the late summer of 1996. I found the recording on a friend's shelf as I was preparing dinner one evening. I was immediately smitten by this wonderful music and decided that I wanted to perform it on an upcoming recital. I read and transposed through the the violin part and determined that, with a few exceptions, the part suited the clarinet. A week of hand written “old school” arranging later, I was ready for a performance! It was a success then and in several subsequent performances at Clarinetfest 2003 and the University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium in 2006. After many requests for publication, I am happy that I can finally share it with my many clarinet friends!About the transcription:
The obvious changes occur in the case of double stops and chords. I also changed the shape of a few scalar patterns to accommodate an extreme tessitura. A few phrases have also been lowered an octave. Many advanced players may find that, with our modern expanded workable range, these changes may not be necessary. I felt, however, that these different colors were more characteristic of the clarinet. In essence this makes the piece it's own unique and viable entity and not simply a note for note transcription. I have also added a few editorial breaths (in parenthesis) eliminating the need for circular breathing; use your own discretion." -
