    From the composer:
"Isa Asp (1853-1872) is recognized as Finland's first female poet. Though her life and career were cut tragically short at only nineteen years of age due to illness, through her writings her legacy lives on. Asp's works often reflect her profound love for her country and its people, admiration for life and its joys from a religious perspective, and her internal struggles with identity, morality, and the restrictions imposed by society, particularly in relation to her sexual orientation. Her poetry also includes both expressions of admiration for lovers and reflections on the personal conflicts she experienced because of her identity.

Her most popular work Lullaby to a Wave has already been set to music by various composers, so I wanted to focus on some of her lesser-known pieces and bring to light some of the more intimate and nuanced reflections within them. These poems are particularly significant to me as a composer who strives for inclusion in all aspects of my music - be it through genre, culture, or different personal experiences. As I worked on this project, I found myself deeply empathizing with Isa’s struggles, especially in her desire to be freely expressive in a world that can, at times, be limiting.

In many ways, For Isa is my way of giving voice to someone who can no longer speak, using the universal musical language to express the emotional complexities of her life and art. I wanted to share her story with audiences who might relate to her plights - the desire to express yourself, find happiness, and navigate a world that can sometimes feel suffocating.

All four poems used in this piece, at some point in the text, mention a "song." Isa used this allegory frequently in her writings to personify a sort of inner voice or form of self-expression. I found it to be an interesting literary device and wanted to utilize it in the music, so it was given a simple motive - a leaping fifth - that recurs throughout the entirety of the piece in different contexts."
