  • As written in the foreword, "Technical development is always a concern to an instrumentalist, but it is often the lack of a player's ability to play music with a sense of line that holds them back.  Wind players devote their entire careers to these qualities in an effort to develop breath, just as a vocalist would.  That is why some of the best etudes for the study of lyricism are taken from time-tested vocalizes."  This edition consists of 45 melodic études compiled from the vocalizes of Concone, Marchesi and Panofka, presented for the purpose of incorporating the lyrical qualities of the human voice.  The editor states that the key focus in these études is a sonorous, flexible, and beautiful tone.  Études are compiled from a variety of 19th century vocal teaching materials, including the following:

50 Leçons de chant, Op. 9
25 Leçons de chant, Op. 10
    Giuseppe Concone
    24 Progressive Vocalises, Op. 85
    Heinrich Panofka
    24 Vocalises, Op. 2
    Mathilde Marchesi

Almost all of the études are one page in length (a few are two pages or a half-page), and have been edited with suggested dynamic and expression markings, breathing, and metronome tempi.  The keys of D Major, F Major, and G Major are used the most, and there is a good mixture of key signatures up to 3 flats and 6 sharps (only one each of B and F♯ major).  There are 36 major and 9 minor key signatures, and they progress upwards in difficulty.  Rhythmic values are also organized in increasing technical demand, starting with half-, quarter-, and eighth-notes and gradually incorporating sixteenth-notes, triplets, and 32nd-notes.   The range is relatively consistent throughout the book, and stays entirely below the altissimo register, with the highest pitch a clarion C6.
