From the composer:
"Sonatine atypique is 'atypical' because of the diversity and contrasting characters of its three movements. In the brisk first movement, marked by its extreme rhythmic precision, the clarinet and the piano seem to engage in a fun chase. A brief middle section, softer and expressive, lets things calm down before resuming the chase, even faster this time!
The second movement, much more relaxed and expressive, moves along a left-hand ostinato pattern in the piano part. The solo part is quite expressive, albeit reserved as its dynamic palette ranges only from p to mf.
The brilliant third movement, stylistically close to Klezmer music (i.e. the musical tradition of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe), uses a mode including two augmented seconds."
