Luigi Bassi (1833 – 1871) was an Italian composer and clarinettist.  According to the editor's preface, the Introduzione e Quartetto was composed a few years earlier than the widely-enjoyed Fantasia da Concerto, both drawing from Verdi's Rigoletto opera.

In general, the present work offers a simplified, slightly easier iteration of the famous Fantasia, one that could be more approachable for earlier developing clarinettists.  It is around 7 minutes long, about half the duration compared to the Fantasia's 12-13 minutes, and has a slightly lower range, capping out at altissimo D6 (instead of altissimo G6).  Some sections have reduced rhythmic speed, like m. 91's sequence is sextuplets, where the analogous spot is thirty-second notes in the Fantasia:

However, it still does have plenty of virtuosic demands with quick rhythms and large leaps.

The three melodies included here are also present in the Fantasia, although the first eight measures include tutti material from Act II not heard in the Fantasia.  Below is a outline of the opera source material; the opera's section and page numbers refer to the full score's 1914 Ricordi edition.

    • mm. 1–33: Act II, No. 10 "Mio padre" recitative, by Gilda & Rigoletto (page 269)
    • mm. 34–46: Act II, No. 10 "Piangi, piangi faniculla" duet, by Gilda & Rigoletto (page 285)
    • mm. 46–101: Act III, No. 12 "Bella figlia dell'amore" quartet, by Duke, Maddalena, Gilda, Rigoletto (page 337)

Mm. 72–90 are exactly the same as mm. 62-80 in Bassi's Fantasia da Concerto work, and the cadenza in m. 96 is very similar to that in m. 86 of the Fantasia.
