Heinrich Joseph Baermann (1784 – 1847) was a German clarinettist and composer.  The Concertstück was originally written for clarinet and orchestra.  The editor notes that it was at one point published by Hofmeister with the title Divertissement for Clarinet and Orchestra, Op. 38, despite the manuscript clearly saying Concertstück

There are two major sections to the work, each preceded by an tutti portion.  After a punchy tutti introduction in G minor, the clarinet enters with a gentle Adagio melody in G Major and 3/4 time.  A fanfare-like interlude in E♭ major ramps up the energy before the clarinet leads into the the second major section, a sprightly Allegretto in 3/8 time.  Given that the composer was a clarinettist, the technical passages are relatively comfortable; highlights include a brief 4-against-3 polyrhythm, and one arpeggio that reaches up to an altissimo B♭6.  The piano part is generally simple and supportive, as this is a showcase piece for clarinet.  It's funny to note that some of mm. 448-450 is virtually identical to a passage in Weber's second clarinet concerto (in the final movement, mm. 206-207), a work which was dedicated to Baermann in 1811.  The manuscript for this work can be found in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (Munich).

Suggested changes in volume, articulation, and breathing have been made by the editor on both the score and clarinet part; in such cases, dynamics and breath marks are in marked parenthesis, and slurs are made with dotted lines. The score has a transposed clarinet part, so it is possible to read/perform directly.
