"I have had a great relationship for a number of years with the wonderful clarinet students at Stetson University and their equally wonderful professors, Drs. Lynn Musco and Jessica Hall Speak. I wanted to give the members of the choir some ownership in the composition, so I asked that they come up with the title of the work and its movements, and I gave them a couple of free improvisation moments in the last movement, where they could express their individual and shared experiences as members of the Stetson Clarinet Choir. The Choir chose the title Padawan Passages, as members of the clarinet studio are often lovingly referred to as "padawans," that is, "masters in training." Indeed, I have had the great pleasure of witnessing many of the Stetson graduates as masters of their work in their various post-college lives." -
