The movement, musically, however, was rooted in antagonism of the Romantic dynamism of Beethoven and Wagner. Many Impressionistic works, including some pieces by Maurice Ravel, employ the whole-tone scale. This six-note scale tends to evoke a sensuous quality and lends itself to the creation of effectively static melodies and non-functional harmonies—i.e., harmonies used for their intrinsic sound rather than as a means to propel the music. Debussy’s piano music also utilizes modal and whole-tone harmonies.
