It is in five sections, each of an average forty seconds' duration, which are played as follows:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"\u003eThe final section is heard first\u003cbr\u003ethen the penultimate and final sections\u003cbr\u003ethen the last three\u003cbr\u003ethen the last four\u003cbr\u003eand finally all five sections in order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece thus 'grows' to fifteen short section in its eleven-minute time-span.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eMain-Lineing\u003c\/em\u003e (the spelling is deliberate) is so called because it uses a compositional method of that name. One voice in the texture carries the 'burden' of the music (the 'main line') while the others act as satellites relating and responding to it. In the present piece the main line passes from instrument to instrument, sometimes swiftly.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the actual \u003cem\u003enotes \u003c\/em\u003eof \u003cem\u003eMain-Lineing\u003c\/em\u003e are written out; but I leave 'loud or soft, smooth or rough' to the players, who are also encouraged to vary certain things during the repeats of the sections.
