With a modest range of the lowest E to Db just crossing into the altissimo register, the music is meant to be accessible to be performed using ANY clarinet in the clarinet family. Set in the key of Bb minor, Cortejo de Aves will challenge a developing player and will push advanced players in different ways.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eMotivated by the International Clarinet Association’s Clareidoscope clarinet festival and composition competition, Cortejo de Aves was written in February of 2021 with the intention of entering the contest. At dawn and dusk, the birds gather here and create an amazing cacophony of birdsong. In this work I wanted to recreate the sounds and textures of this effect by using both the lyrical and rhythmic abilities of the clarinet, but also the color opportunities that the delay pedal offers. You’ll hear a variety of birdsong, from a single bird singing just before dawn, to the back-and-forth calls of birds using the reverse delay. The digital delay creates a sense of duet and birds trying to out-sing each other.  Eventually all the birds arrive in the tree to sing, using the digital delay to create a hazy wall of sound as timbral trills break through the cacophony as individual songs of birds.\"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe work is performed in one movement and is divided into sections with varying delay types (reverb remains on throughout the piece):\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI. Each movement begins with a haiku that I wrote to represent these stories, from\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eGiiwedin Anang\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eguiding us home, to the loon capturing the starry night in bright white spots. These gentle, solitary bees live in pre-made tunnels, often left by beetles or created from bamboo or cardboard tubes. Without a hive or queen to defend, they go about the work of pollination and building nests quietly and efficiently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis single-movement work traces the life of the Mason Bee. We begin inside the stillness of the nesting tunnels, where the first hints of movement gradually appear. The male bees emerge first, bright and crisp, followed by the more lyrical arrival of the female bees, their first wingbeats fluttering in grace notes and timbral trills. When they meet, their musical themes weave together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA playful tango marks their courtship and then then shifts as the females head out alone in search of pollen. Fast grace notes capture the bees tumbling through flowers and returning dusted in the pollen. A sudden cacophony of bees tumbling wildly through the flowers eventually makes their way to the nesting tubes, represented by temple blocks. Here they work methodically, creating a series of partitions in the tubes: mud, pollen cake, egg, mud—repeating this ritual until the tunnel is full.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA gentle hymn becomes a lullaby for the growing larva, who soon begin spinning cocoons. The music darkens as pollen mites enter the scene, unsettling the hymn and threatening the developing bees. But some cocoons survive, and the final section brings a sense of renewal as the young bees awaken and rise into the air to begin the cycle again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese joyful pollinators are essential to a thriving ecosystem, and we must continue to protect nesting habitats so the Mason Bee can continue to survive.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis work is cast in a single movement with the following sections:\u003cbr\u003eI. During the pandemic, Jen began raising Orchard Mason Bees (\u003cem\u003eOsmia lignaria\u003c\/em\u003e), and her stories inspired this work. These gentle, solitary bees live in pre-made tunnels, often left by beetles or created from bamboo or cardboard tubes. Without a hive or queen to defend, they go about the work of pollination and building nests quietly and efficiently.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis single-movement work traces the life of the Mason Bee. We begin inside the stillness of the nesting tunnels, where the first hints of movement gradually appear. The male bees emerge first, bright and crisp, followed by the more lyrical arrival of the female bees, their first wingbeats fluttering in grace notes and timbral trills. When they meet, their musical themes weave together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA playful tango marks their courtship and then then shifts as the females head out alone in search of pollen. Fast grace notes capture the bees tumbling through flowers and returning dusted in the pollen. A sudden cacophony of bees tumbling wildly through the flowers eventually makes their way to the nesting tubes, represented by temple blocks. Here they work methodically, creating a series of partitions in the tubes: mud, pollen cake, egg, mud—repeating this ritual until the tunnel is full.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA gentle hymn becomes a lullaby for the growing larva, who soon begin spinning cocoons. The music darkens as pollen mites enter the scene, unsettling the hymn and threatening the developing bees. But some cocoons survive, and the final section brings a sense of renewal as the young bees awaken and rise into the air to begin the cycle again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese joyful pollinators are essential to a thriving ecosystem, and we must continue to protect nesting habitats so the Mason Bee can continue to survive.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis work is cast in a single movement with the following sections:\u003cbr\u003eI. The choice of instruments was determined by the organizers of the project.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince the female gender was the focus of the project, I wanted it to reflect on the piece itself, creating a story told among women. One very stereotypical image of a woman is the one of her being engaged in a verbal fight (for example with her husband, nagging over trivial, everyday matters).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA more modern variation of such an image, popularized by American media and popular culture, is the so-called “chick fight” (chick: slang: often offensive. A term used to refer to a girl or young woman), where a woman fights against one or more other women, be it verbally or physically. Unlike male fighting, which is perceived as something very aggressive and has, socially speaking, a negative connotation, female fights are not taken as serious and harmful. On the contrary—they are often laughed at and even encouraged by men, who find the image of women quarrelling very entertaining. There is an almost humoristic connotation to them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHaving an ensemble consisting of women only, and being personally fond of using humor in my compositions, I arrived at the idea of writing a witty piece telling the story of a “chick fight” through music. I also incorporated elements of Balkan folk music—the music of my roots. Thus, the “Balkan” part of the title refers to the stylistic expression of the piece, although it can also (but not necessarily) symbolize a fight between two Balkan women—thus spicing up the whole story with the well-known fiery character of Balkan women.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDRAMATURGICAL CONCEPT \u0026amp; PERFORMANCE INSTRUCTIONS\u003cbr\u003eThe composition should tell the following story:\u003cbr\u003eThe clarinet and the basset horn are two solo instruments whose range and technical abilities should serve the players as a competitive tool against one another. They engage in a show-off\/competition against each other, playing the same theme through different variations. Thus, from bars 6 to 39, the clarinetist and the basset horn player should perform in a very theatrical, soloist manner, openly showing their rivalry towards each other. The pianist during this whole time plays the role of the accompanist. After a short break in bar 39 there are a few bars of “confusion”—the two soloists join and lead a quasi-conversation with the pianist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn bar 46 the piano unexpectedly steals the soloists’ spotlight, playing a virtuosic part with the same theatrical soloist attitude the other two instrumentalists had before. This evokes surprise in the other two players (they should in this moment look at each other with wonder and confusion, even a bit of anger, possibly come close to one another and whisper into each other’s ears, looking at the pianist and mimicking comments such as “What does he think he is doing?! How does he have the nerve to take our spotlight like that?!”).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cdiv draggable=\"false\"\u003eIn bar 57 the piano leads back to the dialogue between the soloists and himself, which lasts until another break in bar 62. A resolution Is expected.
