The opening melody is the material on which movements II and III are based. After the opening theme is stated, the clarinets divide into two groups of duets and begin a series of short, overlapping phrases. Over time these phrases become longer and more separated. The duets become more dissonant and higher in register. Finally, the movement comes to a close with a statement of the opening melody, hidden within the texture of the harmonies.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eII. This movement begins with development of the subject of a quasi-fugue. The \"fugue\" subject does not occur in its entirety until the middle of the movement, with a clarinet solo. The second clarinet joins in with a contrapuntal line. The fugue then dissolves and continues to develop. This new development foreshadow the swirling gestures of the fourth movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIII. The opening theme from movement I is now a partitioned line, woven through the four clarinets. The sustained notes create changing harmonies each time a clarinet changes to a different note of the melody. In the middle section, clarinets 2-4 create an accompaniment of slow moving chords changing on every beat while the first clarinet plays a melody above the accompaniment. The movement then returns to the partitioned line now transposed. The first and second clarinets play in octaves, reminiscent of the opening of the first movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIV. The majority of this movement uses swirling, tangled, wind-blown gestures. Using the technique of planing, all four clarinets move together in a fast, furious ascending line. A new motive of quintuplets is stated. The fourth clarinet begins a section in which the solo line is passed and slightly overlapped between clarinets. At times this movement breaks down into the thinner duet texture from the first movement. A brief slow section uses the quintuplet motive. In his senior year he also studied cello, mostly to get familiar with a string instrument; he seemed to take to it naturally, but he didn’t own an instrument, so he stopped playing after graduation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears later, his wife told me that he was feeling the urge to play again, and she took up a collection among friends and family to buy him a cello as a birthday present. I assumed the task of finding an instrument that was decent but not prohibitively expensive, and in that task I had the help of a good Hudson Valley cellist, Nanette Koch. Matt was overjoyed at the present, and he’s working on getting good enough to play some chamber music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to do something to show my appreciation to Nanette, who put in a fair amount of time and energy on the project, and I came up with a musical idea for cello and piano, thinking to write a short “album leaf” type of piece. But, as often happens, things got out of hand: the idea turned into an extended movement which includes some virtuosic passages. The movement consists of a series of distinct sections, sometimes in suddenly different tempos, and that suggested the title “Mosaic.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt obviously wanted to be the first movement of a longer work, so I started getting ideas for a slow movement. Here again, what started out as an undemanding cello part became more demanding as the movement progressed. It has to me the feeling of an intermezzo.\u003cbr\u003eBy now it was time for a finale, and as I worked on the rippling triplets, robust and a little wild, of the opening theme, I got an image in my mind of a dancing cow, laughing and flinging herself around the pasture, which is the reason for the subtitle “La vache qui rit.” It has nothing to do with cheese.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs it turned out, the work was premiered by Michele Zukovsky, Armen Ksajikian, and Brian Pezzone, piano, at one of the annual concerts of my serious chamber music presented by the Armadillo Quartet; the premiere took place at the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena, California on February 22, 2010.\"\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Theodore Presser Company","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50064857596154,"sku":"16400278","price":38.0,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/2337\/0861\/files\/img793copy.jpg?v=1786564792"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.clarinetallmusic.com\/collections\/stretch10.oembed","provider":"CAMco Music, LLC","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
